Description

This module will offer students a critical view of the style, meaning and social implications of the language of journalism. It stresses the understanding of journalism as a cultural practice. It explores the linguistic representation of power structures within society as articulated through the news media. It requires students become familiar with and to employ techniques from applied linguistics such as discourse analysis, stylistics and narrative analysis to expore journalistic output through detailed case studies. Representation of issues such as gender, 'race', ethnicity, social exclusion, national identity and political correctness will be examined to determine the extent to which journalism assists and resists patternings of common-sense views of the world through its use of language.
